United States | Indie-pop Following in the vein of the most emotional male pop singers of recent decades, Matt Hansen's songs speak to broken hearts; they are both dramatic and intense. Born in San Rafael, California, in 2000, Hansen, a shy child whom his parents encouraged to come out of his shell by enrolling him in school theater, studied ethnomusicology at UCLA. For entertainment, he posted covers of his favorite pop songs on social media: sensitive and emotionally charged tracks by pop/rock artists accustomed to large venues. Against all odds, his interpretations of songs like Coldplay's "Yellow" and Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" found a large audience. Hansen then began sharing his own compositions, generating the same enthusiasm. With songs like "Better Off Without Me" (2022), "Let Em Go" (2023), and "Something to Remember" (2023) accumulating tens of millions of streams, Hansen began performing his music live, opening for artists such as Teddy Swims, Lauv, and Alec Benjamin, as well as at renowned festivals like Outside Lands and Lollapalooza.
