Lullabies
How is it that history with a capital H has only remembered very few women and mothers, who nevertheless performed such repetitive actions to take care of their families? This is one of the questions – or even obsessions – that make "Berceuses" beat, a poetic installation by Émilie Turmel where techniques of handwritten writing, screen printing, sound art, and video meet. Created from the eponymous poetry collection (Poètes de brousse, 2023), this work revolves around the themes of motherhood and memory. By presenting text as a motif where the beginning and the end, day and night, front and back, blur, it questions our relationship to time and traces, and seeks to fully measure gestures that are too often invisible.
