Exhibition: Quelque Show by Nico Williams at Ahkwayaonhkeh
Complexe Méduse
Whether in a pawn shop or a craft store, you can always find a little something… Through his exhibition – or his show – Nico Williams creates a space between the two types of commerce, bridging them. In the display window, vintage VHS tapes and video game cases – choice items for pawning – are covered in beadwork. Each one refers to a stereotyped and erroneous representation of Indigenous peoples. The lamps, acquired by the artist from Lilian’s Craft on Manitoulin Island, are adorned with beaded price tags. The artist appropriates each object with his beads. And it is with them that he proclaims his reappropriation; of his identity, of the territory.
