Exhibition: La nature des choses by Renée Forest at VU

Creatures with strange forms present themselves to us, up close, like specimens one might have approached by leaning in near them in the undergrowth. We recognize something familiar in these creatures, and at the same time, they quickly elude the identification we might be tempted to make. Are they the microscopic details of what is not visible to the naked eye, or do they represent samples from a world invented from scratch? Faced with the questions they raise, one might also wonder if it is truly us who are scrutinizing them, or if they are observing us. It is from photographs drawn from reality – real plants, human skin textures – that Renée Forest creates new images that take shape through numerous transpositions. First modeled in three dimensions, they can then be printed, photographed again, transposed onto film, or developed in silver. In this process of transformation, even metamorphosis, of the image, the boundaries between analog and digital blur, even in the material device chosen by the artist to visualize things that seem to resist materiality. Just as they resist delivering a message or an answer, favoring the enigmas that emerge from their fantasized space. VU's residency-exhibition program offered the artist carte blanche to develop a new project and work with the center's team over the past year.
