Battlefields: Family Life in Wartime

On September 19 and 20, 2026, the National Battlefields Commission will set up 18th-century military encampments on the Plains of Abraham, near Martello Tower 1. Admission is free, with continuous activities from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The 2026 edition focuses on family life during wartime. Fifteen years after the clashes of 1759 and 1760, American rebels besieged and attacked Quebec in 1775 and 1776. While many men joined the militia, women were solely responsible for the home. Period characters will recount these years from the perspective of Canadian families, with some activities focusing on alliances with First Nations peoples and their wartime realities. On the program: visits to military encampments, musket and cannon firing demonstrations, and entry into Martello Tower 1. The site is accessible to people with reduced mobility, except for access to Martello Tower 1. The firings are loud, and the Commission recommends earplugs or earmuffs for those with auditory sensitivity.
