VIOLON ET VIOLONCELLE POUR BRAHMS
Grand Théâtre de Québec
LIGHT ON OUR TWO FIRST CHAIRS Powerful, dazzling, spectacular: this is how Lutosławski's Concerto for Orchestra, which he completed in 1954, can be described, in a form borrowed from Bartók that represents the pinnacle of the eminent Polish composer's folk style. Our new solo violinist, Sheila Jaffé, and our solo cellist, Blair Lofgren, bring a touch of romanticism and fervor, at times poetic and at times lively, to Brahms' celebrated Concerto. Composed on the shores of Lake Wörthersee in Austria, the score sweeps us up in a virtuosic momentum culminating in the famous "à la hongroise" finale, marked by its irresistible gypsy rhythms. Our senses continue to be stimulated by Ravel's famous Boléro, one of his last works from 1928, dedicated to the dancer Ida Rubinstein, an icon of the Roaring Twenties. A rhythm repeated infinitely, two long, captivating melodies reiterated 18 times in the most impressive crescendo in history: Ravel's spell continues to move us.
