Soulèvement
Grand Théâtre de Québec
Choreographer: Danièle Desnoyers A key figure in Quebec dance, Danièle Desnoyers creates atypical works, many of which have been performed abroad. These multiple artistic encounters developed in other sociopolitical contexts have, in a way, woven a backdrop against which her new creation, Soulèvement, would develop and illustrate other ways of inhabiting the world. This performance bears the mark of a vital impulse, a dance that is both primal and avidly complex, where joy becomes an act of resistance. Eight women gather in a scenic vortex from which emerges a multiplicity of bodies and sensibilities, confidently reflecting their identity. This project deeply explores the relationship between their dancing bodies and the music. The artist draws on the abyssal repertoire of composer Richard Wagner and creates a dialogue between excerpts from his orchestral work and the electroacoustic soundscapes of Montreal composer Ben Shemie, leader of the band Suuns. “So it is not the context of emergence of Wagnerian work that interests us, nor its romanticism or its ideals, but rather how we react today to this work. We investigate the forces that act within us in the presence of this phantom music. How do these women react to the representation of these exacerbated emotions? What does it bring out of them, how does this music traverse them? [...] If everything is made of flesh in this piece, Shemie’s music, both pulsive and visceral, aims to reach the spectator’s senses in another way.” - Danièle Desnoyers A co-presentation by La Rotonde and the Grand Théâtre de Québec CREDITS Choreography and Artistic Direction: Danièle Desnoyers Performance: Myriam Arseneault Campbell, Châtelaine Côté-Rioux, Kimberley de Jong, Stacey Désilier, Aurélie Ann Figaro, Gabby Kachan, Ariane Levasseur, and Marie-Eve Quilicot Original Music and Sound Design: Ben Shemie Phantom Music: Richard Wagner Lighting Design: Cédric Delorme-Bouchard Costume Design: Danièle Desnoyers, assisted by Myriam Arseneault Campbell Dramaturgy: Guy Cools Artistic Consultant: Anne Thériault Production Management: Martin Boisjoly Technical Direction and Stage Management: Roxanne Doyon Production Photographer: Luc Senécal Production: Le Carré des Lombes Creation Residencies: USINE C + Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique + Département de danse Université du Québec à Montréal (studio 840) With the support of: Société des auteurs et compositeurs dramatiques + Faculté des arts de l’Université du Québec à Montréal + Conseil des arts de Montréal + Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec + Conseil des arts du Canada Dance Series This performance is part of our 2026-2027 Dance Series.
