ROMÉO ET JULIETTE DE PROKOFIEV
Grand Théâtre de Québec
CLEMENS SCHULDT'S "JEANS" CONCERT Clemens Schuldt invites us to come in "jeans" for this concert with an electrifying program, blending Shakespearean and New York inspiration, from the 1930s to the present day. We begin on Broadway with the overture to Candide, inspired by Voltaire's celebrated tale for Bernstein. It captures all the energy, unbridled imagination, and sense of rhythm of the brilliant conductor and composer. We stay in New York, where Kevin Puts first heard the string trio Time for Three, whose eclecticism and inventiveness inspired him to write a concerto. Written in 2022, Contact earned the composer a Grammy, recognizing the audacious creativity of an unclassifiable work, each movement of which establishes a different atmosphere, always on the theme of interconnection. As a climax to this exhilarating evening, the highlights from the ballet Romeo and Juliet—based on Shakespeare's famous tragedy—open our eyes to Prokofiev's visionary spirit: it's hard to imagine that the dancers of the Kirov and then the Bolshoi refused in 1935 to perform to this score, deemed unsuitable for dance! Today, all dancers dream of interpreting this dazzling music.
