PAGANINI, LE VIOLONISTE DU DIABLE
Grand Théâtre de Québec
DUKAS, THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE Young Canadian conductor Naomi Woo is attracting global attention with her boundless energy and infectious musicality. She will lead this concert, which starts with a bang with Liszt's diabolical "Mephisto Waltz No. 1". Supposedly played by the mythical Mephistopheles to make Faust dance, this incandescent and narrative waltz perfectly introduces a masterpiece by Paganini, whose extraordinary virtuosity led people to say he had made a pact with the devil. His formidable Concerto No. 2, famous for its final rondo with the "Campanella" theme, is admirably defended by young Canadian violinist Timothy Chooi. We remain in the realm of magic with Dukas' thunderous "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", immortalized by Disney's film Fantasia: the young sorcery adept enlists a broom to do the cleaning, but loses control until his master returns to interrupt the catastrophe. Finally, one of the most beautiful feats of orchestral writing concludes this imaginative program: Ravel's "La Valse", which he described as "an apotheosis of Viennese dance, mingled with the impression of a fantastic and fatal whirlwind."
