LA MESSE EN DO DE BEETHOVEN
Grand Théâtre de Québec
THE SPLENDOR OF THE CHOIR Under the baton of Jean-Sébastien Vallée, an internationally renowned Canadian-American conductor for his mastery of choral repertoire, our Orchestra and Choir open this concert with a treasure of contemporary repertoire, the moving Cantique des degrés, which Pärt composed to symbolize the ascent of the Temple steps towards heavenly Jerusalem. A spiritual impulse also inspired Mendelssohn for his Fifth Symphony, which derives its title Reformation from a Lutheran chorale theme used in its flamboyant finale. The composer thus celebrated the tricentennial of the Augsburg Confession, one of the founding acts of Protestantism. The fervor of romanticism and vision of this masterpiece dialogues wonderfully with Beethoven's first Mass, composed for Prince Esterházy, a distinguished patron of Haydn. The concluding Agnus Dei alone embodies the precursor character and intensity of the entire score, which heralds the greatest choral works of the 19th century. A presentation by the Orchestre symphonique de Québec Program Pärt: Cantique des degrés Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 5 "Reformation" Beethoven: Mass in C PRELUDE AND PRE-CONCERT Starting at 7 p.m., attend the prelude with Clemens Schuldt, our music director, and Joël Brouillette, director of artistic administration. A meeting that allows for a deeper understanding of the creative process and an informed look at the historical context in which the works were composed. The prelude is followed by a pre-concert where you can hear emerging musicians from the Conservatoire de musique de Québec or the Faculty of Music of Université Laval.
