Ensemble Constantinople and Ghalia Benali
Grand Théâtre de Québec
This production pays homage to the mythical Egyptian singer Oum Kalthoum (1904-1975) and her unforgettable interpretation of the quatrains of the Persian poet Omar Khayyam (1048-1131). Created before a sold-out audience at the Philharmonie de Hambourg, it brings together Ensemble Constantinople and singer Ghalia Benali, a long-time artistic collaborator, in a sensitive reinterpretation of this heritage where Persian and Arab traditions, ancient music, and contemporary creation dialogue. The famous songs of Oum Kalthoum inspired by Khayyam's poetry are revisited and set to music by Kiya Tabassian. Works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Marin Marais, and Dimitrie Cantemir complete this musical journey in original arrangements designed for Ensemble Constantinople and Ghalia Benali, for whom Oum Kalthoum remains a major source of inspiration: "As a child, she was the voice of God. Her voice touched the soul, not just the ears." Through this deeply personal tribute, she revives the spirit of the great diva while giving it new resonance.A concert where poetry, memory, and creation meet to celebrate the timeless work of Omar Khayyam and the incomparable legacy of Oum Kalthoum.A co-presentation by Constantinople and the Grand Théâtre de QuébecConsult the other concerts in the World Music seriesDistribution:Kiya Tabassian: setar & vocalsGhalia Benali: vocalsDidem Basar: kanunCharbel Rouhana: oudTanya LaPerrière: viola d’amore & baroque violinJavier Núñez: positive organNeva Özgen: kemençeEtienne Lafrance: double bassPatrick Graham: percussionHamin Honari: percussion
